The first diesel-powered Jeep Gladiator has been launched in the US due to “overwhelming consumer demand”.

The 2021 Jeep Gladiator EcoDiesel not only delivers significantly more torque than the 3.6-litre Pentastar petrol V6 – the only engine available in Australia – but new standards of fuel economy and driving range for the dual-cab 4x4 ute.


Good for outputs of 195kW of power and 600Nm of torque, the 3.0-litre EcoDiesel V6 will be matched exclusively to an eight-speed automatic transmission in the Jeep Gladiator – just like the petrol V6 version, which offers 209kW/347Nm.

Jeep says the transmission, which has been calibrated for low-RPM shifts and extreme on- and off-road rigours, has “more than 40 individual shift maps to optimise shift points for fuel economy,

Like its gasoline and diesel counterparts, the 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe will get a number of accessories under the Jeep Performance Parts banner, including a lift kit.


Designed to raise the height of the body to increase clearance for off-roading, this is the first lift kit offered for a plug-in hybrid and, to the best of our knowledge—not counting height-adjustable suspensions, of course—and the first offered on any plug-in vehicle.

Priced at $1,495, the lift kit raises ride height by two inches, and was specifically designed for the Wrangler 4xe, according to a Jeep press release. The kit includes four springs, four Fox shocks, front lower control arms, front and rear stabilizer links, front and rear bump stops, and necessary fasteners, all packaged in a reusable wooden crate.

Character and heritage are as much Jeep's stock and trade as off-road capability. "It's a Jeep thing" can be as much praise as it can be damnation, though, depending on who's saying it and why. The 2021 Jeep Gladiator has gotten better at being a Jeep, but it's hardly better at being a truck.

Jeep has officially revealed its most powerful Wrangler ever, the Rubicon 392, for the US market. Getting the bad news out of the way first, this 350kW/637Nm monster is being produced in left-hand drive only, and Jeep says there are no plans for right-hand-drive for now. No doubt there are plenty of local Jeep fans who hope that might change one day.

All that power comes via the '392' namesake, whose cubic inches refers to the 6.4-litre 'Hemi' V8 under the bonnet. It's the first V8 powered Wrangler in 40 years, which has historically relied mostly on six-cylinder power for motivation.

This turns the Wrangler into an impressively fast car. The company claims it can do the 0 to 100km/h dash in 4.5 seconds, and 13 seconds flat for the quarter-mile.

The Wrangler Rubicon 392 will only come in four-door 'Unlimited' format, without a short-wheelbase 'Limited' variant.

Since the first introduction of the new Jeep Gladiator, we've been waiting patiently for the promised EcoDiesel engine option. Well, that time has finally arrived, and for 2021 Jeep's fabulous 3.0L EcoDiesel V-6 has joined the 3.6L gasoline V-6 on the Gladiator's options list.

While we recently had the opportunity to jump behind the wheel for a quick introduction to the new diesel-equipped Gladiator, we naturally wanted a bit more seat time. So, when Jeep asked if we'd like to try one for a week we hurriedly said yes.

Now, one quick note before we get started: We've focused quite heavily on testing Gladiator models over the past year and have put a pretty good cross section of the lineup through the paces. We've tested the Sport S, Overland, Rubicon, and Mojave. For this report, we're going to focus primarily on the EcoDiesel engine.

If you’re keen on the new Jeep Gladiator but can’t stretch to the sky-high $75,000-plus entry price don’t fret, because there’s a more affordable version coming.

Available in Australia by the end of this year, the Jeep Gladiator Sport S will be priced about $10,000 lower than the Overland variant ($75,450 plus ORCs), which will open the all-new dual-cab 4x4 ute range when it is officially launched later this month.

Few other details have been revealed, but Jeep Australia product manager Guillaume Drelon said the cheaper, entry-level Gladiator will likely be based on the more urban-friendly Overland variant, but with fewer standard features.

We are all ears whenever Jeep announces it's doing something to the Wrangler. The rugged SUV is the bedrock of Jeep and the brand is the price of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA).

Our enamor with the current Wrangler is no secret. In fact, we named our 2019 SUV of the Year. And we have known for some time that a plug-in hybrid version was due for a 2020 launch. FCA is great about releasing five-year plans that get us all excited, but the automaker also is more crisis-prone than most automakers. As such, we have learned virtually all the company's plans are subject to change on a whim.

The process takes 12-18 months for the creation of a new paint color while the refresh of an old color shortens that timeline to three to six months.

Australia is the first right-hand drive market in the world to get the Jeep Gladiator but while some markets get access to a diesel engine and a manual transmission, Australia won’t. The 2020 Jeep Gladiator is on Struggle Street, according to Automotive News, an outcome which is somewhat surprising but one which we sort of saw coming last month. It seems that $US33,545 ($50,246) is a lot of money to pay for a pickup.

By Jeep standards, that price is about in line with what you’d pay for other Jeeps—the base price for a Wrangler is $US28,295 ($42,382)—but it does seem remarkable that the Gladiator is the priciest of any standard Jeep vehicle, and for no good apparent reason.

But that’s all on paper (or at least the internet) at least, since Auto News says that the discounts have been heavy after sales dipped post-launch.

The Gladiator is competing with trucks like the Chevy Colorado and the Ford Ranger, both of which have a base price of less than $US30,000 ($44,936). It also apparently is drawing competition from inside its own house.
